Unit 3. Rivers

In this Unit we are going to learn some concepts related to rivers and some main and tributary rivers of Spain.
A river is a natural, flowing body of fresh water that starts in a mountain, crosses valleys and plains and flows into the sea, a lake or another river. A tributary river is a river that flows into another river.
ELEMENTS
- The SOURCE is where the river starts.
- The MOUTH is where river ends.
- The COURSE is the path that the river follows:
- Upper course: is located in the mountain and it is closest to the source. It is steep and narrow.
- Middle course: is located in the central section. It is wide.
- Lower course: is located next to the sea and it is closest to the mouth. . Here the river makes large meandering curves and forms deltas.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RIVERS
The LENGTH is the distance between the source and the mouth.
The discharge is the amount of water passing through the river. It changes in each season.
The REGIME is the discharge variation throughout the year.
- Variable regime: the discharge varies.
- Stable regime: the discharge is constant.
BASINS IN SPAIN In Spain there are 3 main basins:
- Cantabrian Basin: is located in the north of Spain. Rivers are short because they begin in the Cantabrian Range. Rivers have a stable regime.
- Atlantic basin: is located in the west and southwest of Spain. Most rivers are long because they run through the Meseta. Rivers have a variable regime.
- Mediterranean basin: is located in the east and southeast of Spain. All rivers are short, except Ebro. They have a variable regime.
